Herat is an oasis city and the third-largest city in Afghanistan and it’s the capital of the Herat province. Herat is one of the oldest cities in the world and also a world heritage city.
The city has a cold semi-arid climate. Precipitation is very low, and mostly falls in winter. Although Herāt is approximately 240 m (790 ft) lower than Kandahar, the climate in summer is more temperate, and throughout the year it feels far from disagreeable, although winter temperatures are comparably lower.
From May to September, the wind blows from the northwest with great force. The winter is mild; snow melts as it falls, and even on the mountains does not last long. Three years out of four it does not freeze hard. The eastern reaches of the Hari river, including the rapids, are frozen hard in the winter, and people travel on it as on a road.
Herat & Hippy Trail:
Herat was one of the stops on the Hippie Trail on the way to India. In the 1970`s many hippies stopped in Herat to rest. When they got to know Afghan Hash, they stayed for a long time in this city. The area lies in the South of the city. It is close to the Hari river and is a very fertile land. The farmers mainly grow fruit and vegetables. There are over 50 different varieties of grapes grown in the area. No opium is grown here. Cannabis is grown by people for small trade and personal use.
Growing
The plants from Heart usually grow dense, bushy and relatively short, but it can also grow a little larger than usual if given enough space to flourish. Seeds from Heart require a climate that is similar to its place of origin: dry and warm. This large plant can be grown outdoors but it’s also ideal for indoor setups as well as greenhouses, as long as the climate is warm.
This strain is perfect for indoor growing because it can be grown in small spaces. Herat is easy to grow and flowers relatively quickly. At first glance, the plants all look very similar, an indicator of a true landrace, inbred. As they bloom, they exhibit a wide range of aromas, shapes, and colours. These Afghani plants don’t need heavy fertilizers. They like the natural way. They surely require less fertilizers than most modern hybrids.
Taste and smell
The seeds carry already a very fragrant aroma reminiscent of its home region. This 100% pure indica strain smells both sweet and fresh. Still, you’ll detect hints of wild berries, followed by the resinous and oily taste of the hash. The plants produce a strong substance. You will enjoy the flavours of Afghanistan filling the air. The origins of this strain aren’t just evident in her aroma. It tastes just as pleasant with its strong, oily-sweet notes.
Yield
The buds can get quite heavy. The plants almost never need support. Her frame is very sturdy with a large and strong main trunk. The stems are so thick and hard that the plants could easily support 4 times their weight!
How is hash made in Herat?
After harvesting the plants, the flowers are dried while still on the branches and later shaken on a sieve. This powder is the so-called resin. It is then mixed with a little water (so that the powder sticks together) and then pressed together. This lump is spread out on a fire and then pressed and twisted between your hands (note: watch your hands, it gets very hot). Sometimes the hash is also treated with the feet to make it easier to press.
This process is repeated several times until the hash turns completely black. Then you have the famous black afghan! In Herat the plants are shaken only twice. The plants are only harvested when the cold has set in. Afghans call it “Jakh”. “Ab” (translated as Ice Water). The plants that are harvested in winter (beginning of the winter) have a very strong effect!
